Singer, reality star and tabloid staple Jessica Simpson could be the next judge of "American Idol," according to several reports.

TMZ reportedWednesday that there was a "mutual interest" between "Idol" execs and the "Price of Beauty" star.

Entertainment Weeklyalso reports that Simpson, who has been singing professionally since she was teenager, is one of "dozens" of candidates being interviewed to fill the "Idol" judge spot left vacant by Simon Cowell.

Other names rumored to have been tossed around include Elton John, Justin Timberlake, and Nigel Lythgoe. Reps for John and Timberlake both denied the reports.

Simpson would not be a "replacement" for Cowell's role as the tough judge. Instead, according toLife and Style magazine, it would be part of "a massive overhaul" of the show.

"Idol" is rumored to be making the big announcement Monday. The show returns to the air in January of 2011.
